Police close case on missing tourist

POLICE have closed the investigation into the disappearance of an American woman on Bruny Island a year ago. Rachel Funari was last seen on the island on March 3, 2011. The 35-year-old told the people she was with that she intended to walk the Fluted Cape track at Adventure Bay. Her friends raised the alarm when she failed to return to her Melbourne home on March 8. Ms Funari's sister flew from the US to join the search, which was called off on March 20. Kingston police Inspector Ian Lindsay said extensive searches in the area failed to find any trace of Ms Funari. Police then conducted a number of other investigations. ``There was no evidence to suggest during the investigation that there was any criminal activity,'' Inspector Lindsay said. At the time, the officer in charge of the search, Inspector Doug Rossiter, said the most likely scenario was Ms Funari had perished while walking along the shore or the cliffs on the track. Inspector Lindsay said he had spoken to Ms Funari's family on a number of occasions and notified them before referring the file to the coroner in early February.
